2025–W40 #
I had to fix the CNC a second time -- the first fix caused a washer to knock on a screw head when homing the Z axis. I hadn't noticed this when I tested because I don't do a full homing cycle -- I just move the machine near where I want, then power on the controller and sneak up on the XYZ0 that I want.
OttawaSystems was a success! For a minute I was worried that it wouldn't be -- the new space is excellent but we had eight or nine no-shows and I had mistakenly assumed that people would see "6PM" as the start time for talks not the time to arrive. Lessons for the future.
Looking into Guix for personal stuff. Nix doesn't look like it's for me and it also seems like it's in a bit of community melt-down. Increasingly feel like "decent community" is a prerequisite for software. Like: I am not saying everyone has to feel that way -- I am sure I use all sorts of software by people I don't agree with (and watch TV shows and read books and look at art etc.) but where I have a choice between equals: it matters.
A good month for Colocataires, but having the 1st fall directly after OttawaSystems was tiring (the 1st comes with the work of updating our finances; most of our outgoing payments and most of our incoming payments happen on or around then). And, you know, I have my actual job to do (which was also good/fulfilling and also tiring).
I found the Thinkpad USB-C dock! I've been misusing a Steamdeck dock for my work and personal laptop and unplugging was a pain -- since swapping over it's much nicer to pick up and go or swap laptops at the weekend or end of day. Also frees the Steamdeck dock up for ... using with my actual Steamdeck, when I want to play a game on the TV in the living room. Instant improvement and I didn't need to spend any money.
I've decided to lean into oil painting for October instead of my usual digital music. Looptober-aside, I have to listen to what my soul wants, a little.
