I just got my DN42 house in order -- basically setting up from scratch, except for my registry entries for AS4242422552 which were still present. All new peerings, all new bird.conf, all new Wireguard tunnels.
It's pleasing how much more familiar I am with BIRD since I use it to manage a real autonomous system. I mean, you'd hope that's the case right? 😅
I also have an iBGP set up that I am happy with for the first time in a really long time. I've always shied away from next-hop self because it seems like a perversion of how iBGP should work, but in cases where you don't have a traditional flat network with all of the routers able to reach all of the edges, it's basically the only choice? That or give up on BGP as an IGP and run another protocol, I guess.
Also finally went through the jj tutorial from Steve Klabnik and it was very helpful. I think that, because I got my head wrapped around Git Butler first, this time was easy. It's funny, he calls this out as being how a lot of people learn Rust: nothing make sense and then months later they come back and it does. Just needs to roll around our heads for a little bit first.
A lovely townie put together a couple of cool reverse engineering challenges based on an in-joke, where you can check your results against an IRC bot in our channel. People are having a lot of fun with it (including me). Once you've solved it for one input, some folks are building generic solvers to find all inputs or inputs containing arbitrary strings. Neat!
