I rewrote pymesheet into a Ruby port (rymesheet, I guess). This time using Roda and Phlex (I've been meaning to check out Phlex, I like the idea of structural markup being defined in a real language -- like using x-expressions from Scheme). The first version was Rust and, even though I'm liking Rust more lately, I don't think I particularly want to write a "full stack" (lol) webapp with it.
I had an unplanned trip to the DC to fix ~town, so I installed their serial card. Less than two hours later I had a chance to use the BREAK-b over serial to force a reboot, so I guess that was worth it. It's kind-of chill going to the DC on my own without having someone waiting on me, but also I did need to be back for a family thing and I launched straight into running Mothership without much of a break so ... not exactly five stars as experiences go.
I am also looking at (gasp) Kubernetes, especially k3s, for some homelab things. I think k8s is sadly thought-terminating: now that it exists, people will use it unless some clearly better tool (with a clearly better ecosystem) appears, which is unlikely. Even Kubernetes' success was heavily encouraged by hyperscale cloud providers (particularly Google, but really everyone who wasn't AWS -- and eventually also AWS). They took a product that people nominally paid for (like Hashicorp Nomad) and made it effectively free (destroying the software competition) while conveniently being able to collect rent on the VMs that people spin up with it.
Anyway, all of that aside: it's not like it is useless or anything. It's pretty idea for running stateless workloads where you want n of something and you don't care about where they are. Having been at $SHOP and drank the "everything on Kubernetes" FlavorAid it's worth remembering that "some things on Kubernetes" might still be an okay answer. Maybe.
