2025–W42 #
Welcome to ISO week 42. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving.
My writing code has mostly been in Rails/Ruby which is odd. I never wrote that much of it when I worked at the MASSIVE RUBY COMPANY but then that place also had an unlimited supply of people who were better at Ruby than I was. At Slice, although there's plenty of people who are better at Ruby, I have the advantage of having worked on a big monolith and I'm also one of the few on my team (the only one on my team until recently).
I am not at peace with deciding on what programming language to care about. I enjoyed reading the slides from Nate's Goetics talk, and I'm also enjoying how abstract Ruby is. I think when I look at Go, I immediately want metaprogramming, and then when I work with Ruby I immediately want types and do-not-want exceptions. I'll be pretty upset if it turns out Rust is what I wanted all along, because I dislike it along a whole other axis.
I replaced the thumbsticks in a PS5 controller. It's a lot of fucking work. Significantly easier with a heat gun, though then you've got to clean up each through-hole before you can put a new joystick in. I think I successfully replaced the left (the broken one) and fucked up the right (which was originally fine -- I replaced it to have them match). Alas.
