2026–W08 #

Had a datacentre trip this week, and it went pretty well. About three hours to get everything done (new server, removed two switches, installed a new switch at the back of the rack which is so, so much better). We did drop our BGP session due to a slight misconfiguration which is a shame, but it wsas 95% correct on the first try and that's a lot of percent.

Work was being on-call and disliking Terraform (both in general, and how we've done some things). There was a period in the 2010's where new tools were getting invented and adopted all the time and now I feel like we've really reached some local optimums and ossified (looking at you, too, Kubernetes). This is probably sane for businesses and IT departments but it makes me a little sad because it felt pretty exciting and that each thing built on the last. There are some "post-Terraform" tools, but each of the winners (k8s, Terraform, Ansible, Docker) has so much gravity that it's hard to imagine other tools displacing them any time soon.

Guix has been fun, and I want to explore GNU Shepherd a bit more, but it's a bad fit for my four rescued Chromebooks -- their little CPUs and SSDs aren't up to the task, really. Guix really wants to be compiling stuff and resolving things basically every time you touch it.

Off to Ireland (I am in YYZ writing this). Didn't take the Steamdeck because it's a pretty annoying form-factor for packing into my cabin item bag. Also a lot of my video-game time has gone on things happily played with a keyboard and mouse.

Anyway, this has resulted in me taking my personal laptop with me too. Dual wielding. Maybe I'll get something useful and/or fun done during the jet lagged segments.
